Thingvellir

UNESCO rift valley where Iceland's parliament met from 930 AD — walk between tectonic plates and snorkel in Silfra fissure.

Thingvellir is not really a place to sleep — there's no village, just a national park and a couple of farms and guesthouses scattered along its edges. But it's the most historically important site in Iceland (the Althing, one of the world's oldest parliaments, met here from 930 AD in the open-air Almannagja rift) and the most geologically spectacular (you can walk between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates). It's a full-day stop on the Golden Circle rather than an overnight for most people.

If you do stay nearby, it's usually at a farm on the north shore of Thingvallavatn lake or at ION Adventure Hotel — a striking design hotel 15 minutes south. Doubles ISK 19037-ISK 42987 (ION is ISK 36846+). The park is best in early morning or late evening when the tour buses have gone; sunset from the Hakid viewpoint in June is one of the great Iceland views. Suits Golden Circle drivers, snorkelers doing Silfra, and travellers with time for slow mornings.

The turf-roofed Þingvallakirkja church and the adjoining farmhouse Þingvallabær sit right on the lakeshore below the rift, a five-minute walk from the main car park — the church dates to 1859 and the farm still serves as a summer residence for Iceland's prime minister. There's a small cemetery beside it worth ten minutes if you're already there. Camping is allowed at the Leirar site near the visitor centre from May to September, with basic facilities and little more than water and toilets. By 9pm in July the coach parties are long gone and the rift is close to empty, just birdsong and the sound of the Öxará river.

Skip the idea of treating Thingvellir as a base for the whole Golden Circle — Geysir is another 60km east and Gullfoss beyond that, both well over half an hour's drive, so most visitors see all three in a single long day rather than basing here. Laugarvatn, 20 minutes south-east on Route 37, has the geothermal Fontana baths and a couple of guesthouses if you want a soak after the cold of Silfra. Families with young children and anyone chasing convenience over scenery are better off staying in Reykjavik and driving out for the day.

Where to sleep

There are only three or four proper accommodation options in the park's vicinity — ION Adventure Hotel (design, mid-luxury, ISK 36846-ISK 61410), Hotel Grimsborgir (mid-range, ISK 22108-ISK 29477, 30 minutes south), and a few farmstays on Route 36. Book at least 6 months ahead for June-August. Free parking at all sites. The park itself has no accommodation inside — sleep outside, drive in. High season (June-August) pushes ION Adventure Hotel toward its top rate and Grimsborgir books out weeks ahead for weekends; winter (November-March) rates drop by close to a third and the Route 36 farmstays are often the only availability left at short notice. Avoid listings that show up under 'Thingvellir' but sit closer to Selfoss — check the map pin, not the name. For a day trip, book Reykjavik instead; for staying near the park itself, ION Adventure Hotel is the pick.

The essentials

Almannagja rift and waterfall loop (4 km)

Start at the Hakid visitor centre with panoramic view over the whole rift valley. Descend the wooden staircase into Almannagja itself, walk south through the rift past the Logberg (Law Rock) where laws were proclaimed. Cut across to Oxararfoss waterfall, then loop back via the lakeshore path with views over Thingvallavatn. Return via the lower path. About 2 hours with stops. The loop is mostly flat boardwalk and gravel, though the staircase at the start drops steeply into the rift.

Getting there & around

Thingvellir is 45km east of Reykjavik on Route 36, about 45 minutes by car. Bus tours to the Golden Circle include a Thingvellir stop (ISK 11054-ISK 15967 for a full day). Straeto bus 6 runs from Reykjavik in summer only, once daily, ISK 2456. Once in the park there's a road network with car parks at each site — plan on driving between them or walking 20-40 minutes between. From Keflavik Airport, most visitors rent a car and drive straight to the park via Route 41 and Route 36, about 1 hour 15 minutes, skipping central Reykjavik entirely. Inside the park, the visitor centre, Almannagja entrance and Silfra car park sit 10-15 minutes apart by road.
