Getting around Iceland: car, bus and the truth about the Ring Road

A car is genuinely needed for anything beyond Reykjavik, the Golden Circle and the Blue Lagoon. There is no passenger rail in Iceland at all, and while Straeto buses run between Reykjavik, Selfoss, Vik, Hofn, Egilsstadir and Akureyri, services drop to once a day or less in winter. Route 1, the Ring Road, is 1,332 km and mostly two-lane tarmac; a 2WD is fine June to September, but October to April you want a 4x4 for anything past Vik or into the north.

Distances catch people out: Reykjavik to Vik is 187 km (2h15), Vik to Hofn another 273 km (3h30), and Hofn to Akureyri 500 km (7h) with nowhere obvious to sleep in between. Isafjordur is 455 km from Reykjavik and the last 60 km are single-lane fjord road. F-roads to Landmannalaugar and the interior are 4x4-only and legally closed to 2WD hire cars, with fines and voided insurance if you try.

How many nights in Iceland and a first-timer itinerary

Five nights is the practical minimum: two in Reykjavik for the city, Golden Circle and Blue Lagoon, then three moving along the south coast to Vik and Jokulsarlon before looping back. Seven to eight nights lets you add Snaefellsnes from Stykkisholmur or push to Hofn and fly back from there. Ten to twelve nights is what a full Ring Road needs at a sensible pace, sleeping in Vik, Hofn, Egilsstadir or Seydisfjordur, Myvatn, Akureyri and Borgarnes.

Rural areas like Vik, Hofn and Myvatn have limited inventory and often sell out for July by February, which is why the same room can be 25,000 ISK in May and 55,000 ISK in July.
