Getting around Iceland: car, bus and the truth about the Ring Road

A car is genuinely needed for anything beyond Reykjavik, the Golden Circle and the Blue Lagoon. There is no passenger rail in Iceland at all, and while Straeto buses run between Reykjavik, Selfoss, Vik, Hofn, Egilsstadir and Akureyri, services drop to once a day or less in winter.
