Day trip to Snaefellsnes from Iceland
The Snaefellsnes peninsula is called Iceland in miniature — glacier, lava fields, black beaches, cliffs and fishing villages in a 200km loop. It is 2 hours from Reykjavik and doable in a long day.

The route
Drive Route 1 north to Borgarnes (74km) then Route 54 onto the peninsula. Full loop is about 340km round-trip from Reykjavik — leave by 7am, back by 8pm. Fuel up in Borgarnes; stations on the peninsula are sparse.
First stop: Ytri-Tunga beach for the seal colony (free, best at low tide). Then Budakirkja, the black wooden church on the lava field — 10 minutes and a great photo.
The big-hit sights
Arnarstapi has coastal cliffs with a 2.5km walk to Hellnar past sea arches and puffin nests (May-August). Djupalonssandur is a black pebble beach with the rusted wreckage of a British trawler still on the sand. Both free.
Kirkjufell mountain outside Grundarfjordur is the most photographed peak in Iceland — the Game of Thrones arrowhead. Park at Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall ($5) for the classic angle.
Food and return
Lunch in Grundarfjordur — Bjargarsteinn House of Food does fresh cod at $34 with a view of Kirkjufell. Cheaper: the harbour cafe at Olafsvik.
Return via Route 56 across the mountains — shorter but steep and sometimes closed in winter, check road.is. In summer, extend to Snaefellsjokull glacier at the tip for the full-loop experience.
