Day trip to Akranes from Iceland

Akranes is 50 minutes from Reykjavik — a low-key seaside town with two lighthouses, a swimmable geothermal beach, and no crowds.

Read4 min

Why bother?

Because it is what Iceland looks like when the tour buses are somewhere else. 45 km via Route 1 and the Hvalfjordur tunnel ($15 toll paid online at tunnel.is), or free if you drive the fjord loop (add 40 minutes). Free parking everywhere in town, no entry fees for anything except the museum village.

What to do

Start at the twin Akranes lighthouses on the peninsula — the taller one is climbable in summer for $8 and hosts weird little art shows. Walk Langisandur beach; the water is a startling turquoise and there is a free geothermal hot tub at Guolaug right on the sand — bring a swimsuit, changing rooms are on site. Grab lunch at Galito for pizza ($20) or Kaffi Kviku for cod and chips ($22).

Combine with

Glymur waterfall (30 minutes further via the fjord road) or Borgarnes and the Settlement Centre museum ($20, good storytelling about Iceland's Viking founding) another 30 minutes north. This is a soft day — swap the Golden Circle for Akranes if you have been to Iceland before and want the un-touristy version.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Is the Guolaug hot tub really free?

Yes. Three tiered pools on Langisandur beach, open 24 hours, no attendant. Changing rooms have basic lockers.

How do I get to Akranes without a car?

Strato bus 57 from Mjodd terminal in Reykjavik runs several times a day, around $12 each way, 1 hour 15 minutes.

Is there anywhere to stay overnight?

Hotel Bru just outside town ($160) and Guesthouse Bardal in the centre ($130). Most travellers day-trip.

Is the Hvalfjordur tunnel worth the toll?

For a day trip yes — saves an hour round trip. Pay at tunnel.is within three hours of driving through or you get charged extra.
