Who this area suits
The Landmannalaugar area suits serious hikers doing the Laugavegur trail (55 km over 4 days to Thorsmork), day-trippers on organised buses from Reykjavik, and drivers with a proper 4x4 who can ford the F208 or F225 rivers safely. The rhyolite mountains, the natural hot pool at the campsite, and the surreal Bláhnukur summit hike are worth the effort. In-park options are the Ferdafelag Islands mountain hut (book months ahead, around 12,000 ISK per person for a bunk) and the campsite (tent pitches 2,500 ISK).
It does not suit anyone in a 2WD, anyone visiting between October and mid-June (the F-roads are closed), or anyone who wants a hotel with a shower and a restaurant on-site. If that's you, base at Hrauneyjar Highland Center (75 km, gravel road) or in Hella (roughly 130 km, all paved) and day-trip in.
Cost and what's walkable
Hut bunks around 12,000 ISK, tent pitches 2,500 ISK, both cash-poor and reservation-heavy. Highland Center Hrauneyjar runs 25,000-38,000 for a double. Hella hotels (Stracta, Ranga if you’ll splurge) are 22,000-45,000.
From the Landmannalaugar hut you can walk the Laugahraun lava field, up Bláhnukur (about 3 hours return), around Brennisteinsalda's coloured slopes, and to the hot pool five minutes from the campsite. From any hotel outside the park, nothing is walkable — you drive in and back on the same day.

Do I need a 4x4 to reach Landmannalaugar?
Yes, and one with real clearance. The F208 has rivers to ford. If you don’t want to drive it, take a scheduled Reykjavik Excursions or Trex bus from Reykjavik or Hella in summer.
When exactly is the season?
Roughly late June to mid-September, depending on snow and river levels. The exact opening dates change year to year — check the Iceland Road Administration (road.is) and the Vatnajokull National Park site before committing.
