Where to stay in Seydisfjordur: the fjord postcard
Seydisfjordur has 700 people, the blue church at the end of the rainbow street, and a weekly ferry from Denmark — it is the most photographed village in East Iceland for good reason.
Who Seydisfjordur suits
Seydisfjordur suits travellers who want atmosphere over convenience: 19th-century wooden houses in pastel colours, waterfalls dropping down both sides of the fjord, and enough small galleries and cafes to fill a day. It's the natural destination for anyone arriving on the Smyril Line ferry from Hirtshals, and a rewarding overnight from Egilsstadir if you have a spare night. Photographers, artists, and slow-travel couples love it.
It doesn’t suit anyone worried about winter access. The Fjardarheidi pass from Egilsstadir closes regularly from November to April, sometimes for days. If you must leave on a specific day (a flight, a ferry), don’t cut it fine. Also skip if you want restaurant variety — you have maybe five options.
Cost and what's walkable
Mid-range doubles run 22,000-35,000 ISK. Hotel Aldan (with three historic buildings), Hotel Snaefell, and various guesthouses along Nordurgata are the main picks. Prices spike on ferry-arrival nights (usually Thursdays in summer).
Walkable from the blue church: Nordurgata's wooden houses, Skaftfell art centre, Nord Austur sushi (yes, sushi in a fjord village of 700 — it's excellent), Kaffi Lara, the harbour, and the trailhead for the Tvisongur sound sculpture (a 20-min uphill walk). Gufufoss waterfall is 4 km up the pass road.

Questions, answered
Can I drive to Seydisfjordur in January?
Sometimes. The road (Route 93) is a mountain pass at 620 m and closes in storms. Check road.is the morning of your drive and don’t attempt in snow without a proper 4x4 and experience.
How does the ferry from Denmark work?
Smyril Line runs weekly year-round from Hirtshals via the Faroes. Crossing takes about 2 days each way. Popular for travellers bringing their own car or camper.
