Who Selfoss suits
Selfoss suits drivers who plan to hit the Golden Circle (Geysir and Gullfoss are 60-70 km north) and then continue east to Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss and Vik the next day. It sits at the junction of Routes 1 and 30-35, so you can loop the Golden Circle from here and be back for dinner. Families like it because there is a proper supermarket (Bonus and Kronan), a big geothermal pool, and a compact centre you can walk with kids.
It doesn’t suit anyone who came for wilderness — Selfoss is a functional service town on a flat river plain, not a scenic base. If you want dramatic views out the window, drive another hour to Hella, Hvolsvollur or a farm stay near Hekla.

Mid-range doubles run 20,000-32,000 ISK. Hotel Selfoss is the largest option, with a spa; guesthouses on the outskirts drop to 15,000. Prices are about 15% under Reykjavik.
Walkable from Austurvegur: the reconstructed Old Town district (Sundholl, restaurants like Kaffi Krus and Tryggvaskali), the Olfusa river bridge, the swimming pool, and the church. The Bobby Fischer Center is a curiosity — the chess champion is buried in Laugardaelir cemetery a short drive east.
