Who Reykjavik suits
Reykjavik is the right base if you want to walk to dinner, drink at bars until 4am on weekends, and use day tours for the Golden Circle and South Coast without renting a car. Postcode 101 (downtown, Laugavegur, the Old Harbour) puts you within a 15-minute walk of Hallgrimskirkja, Harpa, the Sun Voyager and the BSI tour pickup. Solo travellers, couples on short breaks and anyone flying in late from Keflavik and leaving in three days should stay here rather than fight traffic in from the suburbs.
It is less suited to drivers with a 4x4 and a Ring Road itinerary, families who want a kitchen and quiet, or anyone chasing the northern lights — the city glow kills the show. If you plan to leave the capital every morning by 8am, you are paying central prices for a bed you barely use.
What a night costs and what's walkable
Reykjavik is Iceland's most expensive city for accommodation. Expect roughly 25,000-40,000 ISK (about ISK 22108-ISK 35618) for a mid-range double in 101 in shoulder season, and 45,000+ in July. Guesthouses in 105 or 107 (Hlemmur, Grandi) shave 20-30% off. Hostels like Kex and Loft run 8,000-12,000 ISK for a dorm bed.
From Laugavegur you can walk to Hallgrimskirkja (8 min), Harpa (10 min), the Old Harbour whale-watching docks (12 min), the Sundhollin pool (5 min) and every decent restaurant in the country. Grandi, ten minutes further west, has Marshall House, Valdis ice cream and the Whales of Iceland exhibit.

Is it worth staying in Reykjavik if I have a rental car?
Only if you want a night or two of city time. Parking in 101 costs 250-600 ISK/hour on weekdays and most guesthouses charge extra for a spot. If you’re driving the Ring Road, sleep one night here on arrival and pick up the car the next morning.
Which street should I avoid for sleep?
Lower Laugavegur and Austurstraeti between Frakkastigur and Laekjargata get loud Thursday-Saturday until 4am. Ask for a courtyard-facing room, or book two blocks uphill toward Hallgrimskirkja.
