Who Mosfellsbaer suits
Mosfellsbaer suits hikers, runners, and anyone whose main plan is the Golden Circle. Mount Esja's Thverfellshorn trailhead is a 10-minute drive, and the town sits directly on Route 1 heading east — you leave in the morning and are at Thingvellir in 35 minutes, not an hour. It is also close to Laxnes horse farm, Hvalfjordur's fjord road, and the Reykjadalur hot river hike near Hveragerdi (50 min).
It does not suit anyone who prioritises restaurants, museums or nightlife. The town of 13,000 has a handful of eateries (Mosfellsbakari for pastries, Alafoss wool shop for gifts), and after 9pm it is dead. Non-drivers should not stay here — bus 15 into Reykjavik runs but takes 35 minutes and cuts back after 11pm.
Cost and what's walkable
Mid-range doubles run 18,000-26,000 ISK. Hotel Laxnes and a scattering of country guesthouses along the Leiruvogur estuary are the main options. Farm-stay style apartments run closer to 15,000.
Walkable from the town centre: the Alafoss factory shop, Varmarlaug pool, and riverside paths along the Leiruvogsa. Everything else — Esja, Thingvellir, Laxnes horses, Gljufrasteinn (Halldor Laxness museum) — needs a car, but distances are short.

Can I see the northern lights from town?
