Who Kopavogur suits
Kopavogur works for drivers who want a cheaper bed near Route 1, business travellers with meetings at Smaralind or the tech offices along Hlidasmari, and families who value a supermarket, a pool (Salalaug or Kopavogslaug), and free street parking over walking to a bar. If you are collecting a camper van from Keflavik and driving straight to Vik the next day, sleeping here saves you the downtown traffic and shaves 20 minutes off the morning drive south.
It does not suit first-time visitors on a short trip. There is no historic core, the restaurants are chain-heavy (though Nings and Kringlukrain are decent), and you will take a bus or drive to see anything a tourist came to Iceland for. The 1, 2 and 4 buses reach Hlemmur in about 15-20 minutes.
Cost and what's walkable
Expect 18,000-28,000 ISK for a mid-range double, roughly 15-25% below equivalent Reykjavik rooms. Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Natura is technically in the airport zone but many booking sites file suburban chains here. Airbnb apartments near Smaralind run 15,000-22,000 ISK.
Within a 15-minute walk of Smaralind you have Iceland's largest shopping mall, a cinema, Costco (a 10-minute drive further), and Kopavogur's geothermal pool. Nothing that resembles Icelandic character is walkable — for that, you need a car or the bus into 101.

Questions, answered
Kopavogur or Reykjavik for a first trip?
Reykjavik, unless the price gap is over 30% and you have a car. The atmosphere premium downtown is worth it on a 3-4 night visit.
How long does the bus into central Reykjavik take?
Route 1 from Hamraborg reaches Hlemmur in about 15 minutes off-peak, 20-25 in rush hour. A single fare is 630 ISK in 2026.
