Who Hofn suits
Hofn suits Ring Road drivers, langoustine eaters (this is the town Icelanders come to for humar), and anyone doing Vatnajokull ice cave or glacier hike tours — most tour operators meet at Jokulsarlon or Skaftafell, both within an hour's drive. It also suits birdwatchers (the Ossland reserve is at the town's edge) and photographers, because on a clear day the view across the lagoon to the Vatnajokull ice cap is genuinely one of the best in Iceland.
It does not suit anyone squeezed for time. If you’re doing a 5-day Ring Road you’ll have half a day here at most. Also skip it if you don’t like fish — options for non-seafood eaters are thin, and Pakkhus (the best restaurant in town) is fully seafood-focused.

Mid-range doubles run 25,000-38,000 ISK. Hotel Hofn, Milk Factory, and Fosshotel Vatnajokull (25 km west, actually closer to the glacier) are the main choices. Guesthouses run 18,000-25,000.
Walkable in town: the harbour, Pakkhus and Kaffi Hornid restaurants, the glacier exhibition (Gamlabud), the swimming pool, and the coastal path around Ossland with views of Vatnajokull. Jokulsarlon and Diamond Beach are a 75-minute drive; the closest glacier tongue (Fjallsjokull) is closer.
