Where to stay in Grindavik: is the fishing town open again?
Grindavik was evacuated in November 2023 as the Sundhnukur eruptions began, and access, insurance and accommodation have been patchy ever since — check status before you book.
Who Grindavik suits
When it's open, Grindavik suits Blue Lagoon guests who want to skip the queues (the Lagoon is 5 minutes north), sea anglers, and travellers curious about a working fishing town that has lived through geological upheaval on live television. Bryggjan cafe, the Saltfish Museum, and the harbour are the traditional draws. The whole town sits inside the Reykjanes Geopark and the Fagradalsfjall trailheads are 15-20 minutes east.
It does not suit anyone who wants certainty. Since 2023 several fissures have opened within a few kilometres of town, roads have been rebuilt, and hotels have opened and closed with civil protection orders. Confirm with your booking and the Iceland Met Office before travelling, and buy travel insurance that specifically covers volcanic events.
Cost and what's walkable
When operating, Grindavik has a small stock: Northern Light Inn (technically just outside town near the Blue Lagoon), Guesthouse Borg, and holiday apartments. Rates run 20,000-35,000 ISK, propped up by Blue Lagoon proximity.
From the town centre you can walk to the harbour, Bryggjan for lobster soup, the sports centre, and the Kvikan cultural centre when open. The Blue Lagoon is a 5-minute drive but not safely walkable — the road has no shoulder.

Is it safe to stay in Grindavik in 2026?
Depends on the week. When authorities lift evacuation orders and the town is open, insurance is available and Civil Protection deems it safe. Never override an active order — the barriers exist because lava reached houses in January 2024.
Is the Blue Lagoon open even if Grindavik isn’t?
Sometimes. The Lagoon has its own access road and has operated during several Grindavik closures, but it also closes for eruptions. Check bluelagoon.com the morning of your visit.
