Who Gardabaer suits
Gardabaer suits business travellers visiting one of the companies headquartered here, wedding guests with a venue on-site, or drivers who need a cheap bed near Route 1 with fewer traffic lights than Kopavogur. It is a well-kept residential town of about 18,000 people, with the Videy-facing coast on one side and lava fields on the other. Vifilsstadavatn lake and the walking trails around Heidmork nature reserve are within a 10-minute drive and genuinely worth a morning.
It does not suit tourists on a short trip. There is essentially no nightlife, the restaurants are limited, and 'downtown Gardabaer' means a strip mall around Gardatorg. You will drive or bus into Reykjavik for dinner. First-time visitors should book here only if the price difference versus 101 exceeds 40%.
Cost and what's walkable
Room count is small — most stays are Airbnbs in residential houses or the occasional guesthouse — but expect 15,000-25,000 ISK for a mid-range double. Prices track Kopavogur's, sometimes below.
Walkable within 15 minutes of Gardatorg: a Bonus supermarket, the Honnunarsafn Islands (Design Museum of Iceland), a swimming pool, and residential streets. Heidmork's marked trails, the closest thing to nature-on-your-doorstep, need a car. Reykjavik centre is 15 minutes by car, 25-30 by bus.

Is Gardabaer safe to walk at night?
Extremely. It is one of the safest places in one of the safest countries. The downside is there is almost nothing open past 10pm to walk to.
Any reason to pick Gardabaer over Kopavogur?
Access to Heidmork trails and the coast at Alftanes. If you plan hiking mornings and Reykjavik evenings, it works. Otherwise Kopavogur has more restaurants and shops.
