Where to stay in Akureyri: the northern capital
Akureyri has 20,000 people, its own domestic airport with flights from Reykjavik in 45 minutes, and is the only town in Iceland outside the capital region that functions like a small city.
Who Akureyri suits
Akureyri suits anyone building a north Iceland trip: it's 90 minutes from Godafoss, an hour from Myvatn, 75 minutes from Husavik for whale-watching, and within reach of Trollaskagi's ski areas (Hlidarfjall is 15 minutes out of town). It has restaurants that stay open, a proper botanical garden, the Hof cultural centre, and Iceland's second-oldest church on the hill. In winter, it's the practical alternative to Reykjavik — cheaper aurora sightings, no traffic, working ski lifts.
It doesn’t suit anyone on a first, short trip who won’t drive. You can fly in from Reykjavik and use tours, but the range of options is much thinner than from the capital. Also skip Akureyri if you want ocean waves — Eyjafjordur is a calm fjord, not the open Atlantic.
Cost and what's walkable
Mid-range doubles run 22,000-35,000 ISK, roughly 15% below Reykjavik. Hotel Kea, Icelandair Hotel Akureyri, and Hotel Nordurland are central. Guesthouses on Hafnarstraeti drop to 15,000-20,000.
Walkable from Ragnheidarstraeti: the botanical garden, the church, Hof concert hall, the Christmas House shop (in summer too), Bautinn and Rub23 restaurants, and the Sundlaug Akureyrar pool (one of the best in the country). The airport is 3 km south — walkable in 40 minutes or a 1,500 ISK taxi.

Is it worth flying to Akureyri instead of driving from Reykjavik?
For a 3-4 night northern trip in winter, yes. The drive is 5-6 hours in summer and can be closed in winter. Flights run 15,000-25,000 ISK one-way.
Is Akureyri good for northern lights?
Yes, better than Reykjavik because there's less light pollution and the surrounding fjord walls give clear northern sky. Drive 10 minutes out of town for the darkest views.
