Where to sleep and eat
Hotel Kria (ISK 31933) is the newest and best-equipped, five minutes from Reynisfjara. Icelandair Hotel Vik (ISK 27020) sits on the hill with sea views. Puffin Hostel (ISK 9212 dorm, ISK 22108 private) is the honest budget pick. For food: Sudur Vik (ISK 4913 mains) does the best lamb; Smidjan Brugghus (ISK 2702 burgers) is a microbrewery with strong burgers; the N1 gas station soup (ISK 2211) is genuinely fine. Skip the black beach cafe — overpriced and slow.
What to see in 24 hours
Reynisfjara black beach at 7am before the buses (30 min). Dyrholaey arch and lighthouse (1 hour, closed May-June for puffin nesting). Vik i Myrdal church for the postcard shot (10 min). Drive 30 minutes west to Solheimajokull glacier tongue and walk the marked trail (ISK 0, or ice-hike with Icelandic Mountain Guides for ISK 13510). Drive 30 minutes east to Fjadrargljufur canyon. That's a packed day and a full night's justification.
Good to know
Questions, answered
Is Vik a good base for the south coast?
Yes, better than Selfoss or Hella if you’re prioritising Reynisfjara, Skogafoss and Jokulsarlon (2 hours east).
Petrol in Vik?
N1 and Orkan stations both in town. Fill up — the next stops east are 70km away.
