The essential stops
Leave Reykjavik 7am. Gerduberg basalt columns (30 min stop). Ytri-Tunga seal beach (30 min). Budakirkja black church for the photo (15 min). Arnarstapi cliffs and stone arch (1 hour walk to Hellnar). Djupalonssandur black pebble beach and shipwreck (45 min). Saxholl crater climb (20 min). Kirkjufell and Kirkjufellsfoss for the postcard (30 min). Grundarfjordur for a late lunch ($25 fish and chips at Bjargarsteinn). Home by 10pm.
Stay overnight instead
The peninsula deserves two days if you can spare them. Hotel Budir ($350) is the atmosphere option — black church, fireplace, storm views. Fosshotel Stykkisholmur ($240) has the better base for the north side. Overnight lets you catch Snaefellsjokull glacier in morning light and the puffin cliffs at Londrangar at golden hour. If it's May-August, add Vatnshellir lava cave ($40 tour) — Iceland's only genuinely walkable lava tube.
