The daylight and weather reality
Sunrise around 11:20am, sunset around 3:40pm at the start of the month, stretching to 10:10am and 4:45pm by the 31st. That's genuinely four to six hours of usable light. Temperatures average -3C to 2C in the city — colder than you’d think for a place called Iceland, but not brutal. What kills you is the wind: 15-20 m/s gusts are normal, and horizontal sleet happens weekly.
Pavements ice over. Locals wear crampons (mannbroddar) that clip onto boots — buy a pair for 3,000 ISK at any hardware shop and thank yourself. Storms cancel day tours regularly; build a buffer day and don’t book the Golden Circle for your last morning before a flight.
Prices, openings, and what to actually do
January is the cheapest month bar none. Downtown three-star hotels sit at 18,000-24,000 ISK, guesthouses from 14,000. The Blue Lagoon is 30% cheaper than in July and half as crowded. Museums, Harpa concerts, the geothermal pools (open 6:30am to 10pm daily), and every restaurant are running normally.
Aurora hunting is the main draw — cloud-free nights give you real chances from anywhere outside the city's light pollution. Grotta lighthouse is a 20-minute walk from downtown and works fine. Thorrablot begins late January into February, meaning fermented shark, ram's testicles and sheep-head jelly appear on menus. Try it once at Cafe Loki opposite Hallgrimskirkja.

Odds are good but not guaranteed. You need clear skies and solar activity, and even then you might need three or four nights of trying. Staying five nights gives you a strong chance; two nights is a coin flip.
Route 1 around the south and west is usually fine and cleared quickly, but conditions change hourly. Check road.is every morning. Avoid renting a 2WD; get a small 4x4 for around 12,000 ISK a day and don’t drive at night if you’re not used to snow.
