Iceland school holidays and when locals travel

Six domestic travel weeks a year push up rural rates and empty out the capital — here's when and where Icelanders actually go.

The Icelandic holiday calendar

Icelandic schools follow a distinctive calendar. Autumn break (vetrarfri) is a long weekend in late October, usually the Thursday-Friday of week 43. Christmas break runs 21 December to 3 January. Winter break (sportleyfi) is a week in late February, differing by municipality — Reykjavik typically takes week 8. Easter break is the full Easter week. Summer holidays run early June to mid-August.

First Day of Summer (late April) and Whit Monday are single-day holidays. Verslunarmannahelgi — the Commerce Weekend in early August — is the biggest domestic travel weekend of the year, when Reykjavik empties and half the country heads to festivals. Thjodhatid in the Westman Islands is the big one, drawing 16,000 people.

What this means for your booking

During winter break week (mid-February), rural hotels near ski areas — Bjorndalur, Hlidarfjall in Akureyri, Blafjoll — book solid with Icelandic families and rates jump 30%. Reykjavik is quieter than usual. During Commerce Weekend (first weekend of August, always Saturday to Monday), Westman Islands hotels are sold out a year ahead, mainland festival towns spike, and Reykjavik has last-minute availability at 15% below normal.

Summer houses (sumarbustadir) are how Icelanders holiday — small cabins in Borgarfjordur, around Selfoss, and in the south. From 20 June to 15 August rural guesthouses and Airbnbs compete with domestic demand and prices reflect it. If you want a quiet countryside stay in August, mid-week is cheaper by 20% than weekends.

Before you book

What people ask before booking Reykjavik.

When is Verslunarmannahelgi 2026?

The Commerce Weekend 2026 falls on Saturday 1 August through Monday 3 August. Book Westman Islands accommodation by January if attending Thjodhatid, or avoid the Ring Road that weekend — traffic doubles and rural hotels are full.

Should I avoid Icelandic school holidays?

Only if you’re staying rural or near ski areas. Winter break and Easter push up prices in the countryside but leave Reykjavik relatively normal. For city-based trips, school holidays barely register except at Easter.
