It's tight, it's mostly camping and Bonus supermarket lunches, but $50 a day in Iceland is possible June through August — here's exactly how the math works.
Where the money goes
Campsites: $15-22 a night (Skaftafell, Vik, Myvatn, Akureyri). Camping card $199 for 28 nights across 40 sites — pays back in 10 nights. Food: Bonus supermarket bread, skyr, apples, hummus, canned fish, pasta = $12 a day. One splurge lamb-soup lunch at a gas station: $18. Water is free from the tap everywhere. Coffee: brew your own or accept the $5.50 flat white as your one indulgence.
Transport is the killer
A rental car sub-compact costs $55 a day minimum in summer, plus $12 for gravel insurance and $10-15 a day in petrol on the Ring Road. That already blows the budget. Real answer: Straeto public buses connect the south coast and the Ring Road towns for $15-40 a leg, plus hitchhiking (culturally accepted, statistically safe). Or rent a car with 3 friends and split — $28 a person a day is realistic.
