The fireworks reality
Reykjavik on 31 December is one of the world's strangest urban spectacles. There is no official city fireworks show. Instead, the search-and-rescue teams (ICE-SAR) sell fireworks as their main annual fundraiser, and Icelandic households collectively spend about 800 million ISK on them. From roughly 11:30pm to 12:30am, the entire city fires simultaneously from back gardens, balconies and street corners in a 360-degree ring.
The best free viewpoints are Hallgrimskirkja hill, Perlan, and Grotta lighthouse. Arrive by 11pm. Bring good gloves and eye protection — you’re not behind a safety line, you’re inside the show. Around 8:30pm, gather at one of the neighbourhood bonfires (brennur) that burn across the city; ask your hotel for the nearest.
Prices, closures and food
Downtown three-star rooms hit 45,000-60,000 ISK for the night of 31 December, and many require a two- or three-night minimum stay. Book by August. The Retreat at Blue Lagoon and ION Adventure hotels sell out by June.
Almost every restaurant closes 31 December from mid-afternoon and stays shut on 1 January. New Year's Eve buffets at hotels (Grand Hotel Reykjavik, Hotel Borg) are the standard solution — book by October, expect 15,000-22,000 ISK per person. Supermarkets close by 4pm on 31 December. Buses run holiday schedules 1 January. Museums closed. Blue Lagoon and pools open with reduced hours.

It's safe with common sense — wear protective eyewear, keep pets indoors, and stay clear of anyone actively lighting rockets. Icelanders do this every year without a mass-casualty event, but minor injuries happen. Hospitals staff up for the night.
Stay outside the capital region. Vik, Hofn and rural hotels have modest fireworks and are peaceful by 1am. Or book an aurora-focused countryside stay like Hotel Ranga — they run a New Year's package with a manageable buffet and clear skies for lights.
