Iceland in two days: Golden Circle plus South Coast

Two days, roughly 650 km of driving, and the four sights everyone comes for.

Day 1: Golden Circle to Hvolsvollur

Leave Reykjavik at 8am, do Thingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss in that order, and lunch at Fridheimar around 1pm. From Gullfoss, cut south on Route 30 through Fludir and Selfoss, joining the Ring Road east. Detour 10 minutes to the Kerid crater (1,000 ISK entry) if you skipped it earlier. Push on to Hvolsvollur or Hella for the night — you want to sleep east of Selfoss so day two is not front-loaded with driving. Arrive by 6pm, eat at Eldsto in Hvolsvollur.

Sleep in Hvolsvollur (Hotel Hvolsvollur or the Stracta) or push another 30 minutes to a guesthouse near Seljalandsfoss for sunrise photos.

Day 2: Seljalandsfoss to Vik and back

Start at Seljalandsfoss by 9am, walk behind the falls (bring waterproofs), then 10 minutes down the road to Skogafoss by 10:30. Sölheimajökull glacier tongue is a 15-minute detour if you want a short walk to ice. Reynisfjara black sand beach at 12:30 — stay well back from the water, sneaker waves kill people here most years. Lunch in Vik at Sudur Vik around 2pm.

Turn around at Vik. The drive back to Reykjavik is 2.5 hours if you do not stop, but Skogar folk museum and the DC-3 wreck at Solheimasandur (45-minute walk each way) are worth it if you have daylight. Back in the capital by 7pm.

Questions, answered

Can I make it to Jokulsarlon in two days?

Only if you sleep in Vik or Kirkjubaejarklaustur on night one. From Reykjavik and back in two days it is 800 km, which is doable but joyless.

Do I need a 4x4 for this route?

No. The Ring Road is paved and cleared year-round. A small 2WD is fine except in the worst winter storms, when you should not be driving at all.
