What the month actually feels like
October in Iceland is what people wish September was. Aurora activity is genuine — the sky is dark by 8pm and stays that way. Temperatures sit at 2-7°C in Reykjavik, colder inland, but roads are almost all still open. First-week visitors get autumn colour in Thorsmork and around Myvatn; last-week visitors get the first snow on the mountains, which photographs beautifully at Kirkjufell and Vestrahorn.
The Ring Road is fully drivable in a 2WD car in a normal October. F-roads close between October 5 and 20 depending on snow. This is the last month for the Askja area (accessed by super-jeep tours only from mid-October) and effectively the transition month from summer to winter mode across the whole country.
Prices, festivals and closures
Reykjavik mid-range: 28,000-36,000 ISK, dropping through the month. Ring Road guesthouses 22,000-30,000 ISK. Rental cars 7,000-9,000 ISK a day for a small 4WD. The one price spike is Iceland Airwaves, the country's biggest music festival, which has moved to the first weekend of November in recent years — check the exact dates for 2026, because it distorts October's final week if it lands then.
Reykjavik International Film Festival runs late September into early October. Puffins are gone by September 20. Whale watching operates but on reduced schedules; Husavik tours drop to two daily. Most rural swimming pools stay open year-round. Some tourist-facing farm-stays close from October 15 for the season, so confirm rather than assume.

Do I need studded tyres in October?
Not usually before October 20. Rental cars in Iceland typically switch to winter tyres by November 1 automatically. If you’re driving to Myvatn or Egilsstadir late in the month, ask the rental to swap early.
