Iceland in February: Winter Lights and quiet hotels

The most underrated month, with 8 hours of daylight by month's end and hotel rooms still under 25,000 ISK.

Why February beats January for most people

You get proper daylight back — 7 hours at the start, nearly 10 by the 28th. Temperatures are almost identical to January (-2C average) but the psychological difference is huge. You can actually do a full Golden Circle day tour and see it in light. Aurora nights are still long enough for hunting.

The first weekend brings Winter Lights Festival (Vetrarhatid), when Reykjavik lights up museums for free late-night openings, projects animations onto Hallgrimskirkja, and runs the Pool Night where geothermal pools open until midnight with music and lights. It's aimed at locals but tourists are welcome and it's genuinely charming.

Rates, regional access and what's off-limits

Reykjavik hotels sit at 20,000-26,000 ISK. Akureyri drops further, around 18,000 for a solid three-star like Kea. Vik and Hofn on the south coast are quiet — you’ll get a room at Hotel Vik i Myrdal for around 22,000. Myvatn stays open (Myvatn Nature Baths are wonderful in snow) but check road conditions before committing to the north.

F-roads are closed. Landmannalaugar is unreachable without a super-jeep tour. The Westfjords are technically open but roads to Isafjordur close regularly — fly there rather than drive. Seydisfjordur's mountain pass shuts for days at a time; if you want the East, be flexible.

Before you book

What people ask before booking Reykjavik.

Is Valentine's Day a big deal in Iceland?

Not really — Icelanders celebrate Konudagur (Woman's Day) in late February and Bondadagur (Husband's Day) in late January instead. But hotels sometimes run couples packages at ION Adventure or Retreat at Blue Lagoon around 14 February anyway.

Can I do the Ring Road in February?

Technically yes, but you need 7-10 days minimum, a 4x4, willingness to sit out storms, and daily checking of road.is. Most first-time visitors should stick to south coast and Golden Circle in February and save the full loop for June to September.
