Iceland high season June to August: what to expect

The prices, honestly

A mid-range double in Reykjavik that costs 22,000 ISK in February runs 55,000-70,000 ISK in July. Vik and Hofn are worse per capita: the Hotel Vik i Myrdal sits around 48,000 ISK, and if you don’t book by March you’ll be commuting from Selfoss. Rental cars follow the same curve. A basic 2WD is 12,000-15,000 ISK a day in high season versus 6,000 in April. Campervans double to 25,000-35,000 ISK a day and sell out by May.

The Ring Road towns with only two or three hotels — Hofn, Egilsstadir, Djupivogur — are where the squeeze bites. Book those anchor nights first, then fill Reykjavik and Akureyri around them. Guesthouses on booking.com sometimes have last-minute cancellations at 10pm the night before, which is how I’ve saved trips.

What actually opens

This is when the interior comes alive. F-roads to Landmannalaugar (F208) and Thorsmork (F249) open mid-to-late June. The Askja route, Kjolur and Sprengisandur open early to mid-July. Highland buses from Reykjavik Terminal run daily from around June 15. Puffin colonies at Latrabjarg, Dyrholaey and the Westman Islands are active from mid-May through mid-August.

Every museum, pool and tour runs at full frequency. Whale watching from Husavik goes eight departures a day; the Silfra snorkelling operators at Thingvellir add midnight tours in July. Downside: Reynisfjara beach and Skogafoss have coach traffic from 10am to 5pm. Start at 7am or arrive after 7pm — the light doesn’t leave until midnight anyway.

Festivals that fill towns

Secret Solstice used to draw crowds around June 21 but has been on hiatus; check before planning. The Westman Islands' Thjodhatid festival on the first weekend of August fills every ferry and hotel bed on Heimaey — book by January. Culture Night in Reykjavik (mid-August) draws 100,000 people downtown. Akureyri's Ein med ollu on the same weekend packs the north.
