The 13 days before Christmas
From December 12 the Yule Lads arrive one per night — Sheep-Cote Clod first, then Gully Gawk, Stubby, Spoon-Licker and so on through Christmas Eve. Kids leave shoes on windowsills for small gifts. Reykjavik's Christmas market at Ingolfstorg runs from late November through December 23 with local wool goods, smoked lamb and hot chocolate at real prices. The Yule Cat sculpture on Laekjartorg is worth seeing after dark.
December 23 (Thorlaksmessa) is when Icelanders traditionally eat fermented skate — the smell hangs over restaurants like Kaffi Loki and Islenski Barinn all day. It's an acquired taste but a real cultural experience. December 24 evening is when Christmas actually happens; most shops shut at 1pm and don’t reopen until December 27.
Rates and closures
Hotel rates split. December 15-22 is relatively quiet at 25,000-32,000 ISK in Reykjavik. December 27 to January 2 is peak: 45,000-65,000 ISK, with New Year's Eve itself sometimes 70,000 ISK for a downtown room with view. Book by August for NYE. Ring Road towns are cheaper but many restaurants close December 24-26.
December 25, 26, January 1 are full public holidays. Most museums closed. Blue Lagoon runs reduced hours. Supermarkets shut December 24 afternoon through December 26. Buses run Sunday schedule. Airport is fully operational — Icelanders travel.
New Year's Eve, honestly
This is the event. Bonfires (brennur) burn around the city from 8:30pm; the biggest are at Aegisida and Skarhagi. At 10:30pm the country pauses for Aramotaskaupid, a satirical TV review of the year. Then from 11:30pm to about 12:30am, private fireworks (sold by ICE-SAR rescue teams as their main fundraiser) go up from every garden and street corner. It's genuinely one of the most spectacular urban displays anywhere. Wear ski goggles if you’re close — spent shells rain down.

Where should I watch the fireworks?
Hallgrimskirkja hill, Perlan viewing deck, or Grotta lighthouse if you want distance and the full skyline. Downtown at ground level is chaotic and smoky but the closest experience.
Are restaurants open on Christmas Day?
A handful of hotel restaurants serve a set jol menu at 15,000-22,000 ISK per person. Book by early December. Most other places are closed December 24 evening through December 26.
