Iceland Airwaves: what November looks like

Four nights that make November hotel prices spike 60%, plus what the rest of the month is actually like in Iceland.

The festival and its price shadow

Iceland Airwaves usually runs the first Thursday-to-Sunday of November across venues in central Reykjavik — Harpa, Gamla Bio, Idno, Frikirkjan church, plus dozens of bars hosting off-venue free shows. A wristband runs about 32,000 ISK. Line-ups mix Icelandic artists (Of Monsters and Men, JFDR, Laufey have all played) with international indie.

Hotel prices during the four festival nights hit 38,000-48,000 ISK, versus 22,000 ISK the week before and 24,000 the week after. If you don’t care about the festival, avoid these dates. If you do, book by June and stay walkable to Harpa — Center Hotel Plaza, Reykjavik Konsulat and Kvosin are all under five minutes.

November outside the festival

The rest of November is deep shoulder — arguably the best value month of the year. Rooms drop to 20,000-26,000 ISK. Daylight shrinks fast, from 8 hours on the 1st to 5 hours by the 30th. Temperatures average 0-4C. Aurora season is in full swing.

First Day of Winter (Fyrsti vetrardagur) is the Saturday between 21 and 27 October, so November officially begins in winter. Snow arrives properly mid-month in the north. Ring Road driving becomes weather-dependent; the south coast stays accessible but expect closures on the east and Westfjords roads. Christmas markets begin at Ingolfstorg in late November, and the giant Yule Cat sculpture appears on Laekjartorg square.

Before you book

What people ask before booking Reykjavik.

Is Iceland Airwaves worth flying in for?

If you like Icelandic and Nordic indie music, yes — the intimacy of small venues and the off-venue free shows are unmatched. If you’re mostly there for landscape and aurora, skip the festival dates and come the following week at half the hotel price.

When are the Airwaves 2026 dates?

The festival typically runs the first full weekend of November. Confirm dates on icelandairwaves.is — line-up and wristband sales usually open in April or May.
