The real thing
Panorama Glass Lodge near Hvalfjordur is the archetype: a small cabin with a full glass ceiling over the bed, private hot tub, no light pollution, and staff who wake you if the aurora appears. Prices run 800-1,200 EUR a night and it books six months out for winter. Aurora Cabins near Hella offer a cheaper version with glass gables rather than full ceilings, still very good. Hotel Ranga's observatory suites are themed rooms rather than glass roofs, but the on-site observatory with heated telescopes is a genuine differentiator.
5 Million Star Hotel outside Reykjavik puts you in a glass-walled bubble with the roof open above. The novelty is real, the insulation less so; expect to run the heater constantly. Buubble sites near the Golden Circle offer the same concept with better siting away from farm floodlights.
Panoramic windows count too
Ion Adventure Hotel's Northern Lights Bar has floor-to-ceiling glass across the whole room, which does more for group viewing than a private glass roof. Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon has large bedroom windows facing north across empty land, no glass roof but real darkness. Hotel Husafell has north-facing rooms with wide glazing and an aurora wake-up service.
Honest reality: no glass roof produces the lights. You still need clear skies, high solar activity and darkness. Late September through mid-March is the window; December and January give the longest nights but the worst weather. If aurora is the whole trip, book three nights minimum somewhere rural to hedge against cloud cover.
