The three stops
Thingvellir National Park (tectonic plate rift, first parliament in 930 AD, and where Silfra snorkelling launches from). Geysir geothermal area (Strokkur erupts every 5-8 minutes; the original Geysir is dormant). Gullfoss waterfall (two-tier, 32m, spectacular). Total drive from Reykjavik: 240km, 3.5 hours pure driving. Add stops and lunch, it's a full 8-10 hour day. Parking is $8 at Thingvellir, free at Geysir and Gullfoss.
How to avoid the buses
Buses arrive at Geysir 11am-2pm and Gullfoss 12pm-3pm. Reverse the loop — start with Gullfoss at 9am (empty), Geysir at 10.30am, Thingvellir 1pm. Or add a fourth stop: Kerid crater ($5), Fridheimar tomato farm greenhouse restaurant ($40 for the famous tomato soup + bread), or Secret Lagoon at Fludir ($40 to soak). Fridheimar in particular is booked out — reserve two weeks ahead.
Self-drive or tour?
Self-drive if you’re already renting — the route is well-signed, all paved, and works even in winter. Small-group tours run $110-140 and are genuinely fine if you don’t want to drive. Skip the big coach tours ($90) — you’ll spend more time boarding and unboarding than at sights. Reykjavik Excursions and Iceland Horizon are the small-group picks.

Can you do the Golden Circle in winter?
Yes, all three stops are open year-round with parking cleared. Ice on the Thingvellir paths — wear grip soles. Aurora tours often extend the loop into evening.
Is one day enough?
Yes. If you want to slow it down, stay a night at Ion Adventure Hotel at Thingvellir ($380) and break it across two days.
