The 10 best places to eat in Reykjavik, ranked
Bowl of Icelandic lamb soup with rye bread
Ten restaurants ordered by the answer to: would I send my picky friend here?
The top five
1. Dill on Hverfisgata — Iceland's Michelin-starred tasting menu at around 22,000 ISK, still the most confident cooking in the country. 2. Matur og Drykkur in Grandi for reinvented traditional dishes; the halibut soup is legitimately great. 3. Grillmarkadurinn on Laekjargata for a proper grill night, lamb chops around 6,500 ISK. 4. Baejarins Beztu Pylsur — the hot dog stand, 650 ISK with everything, and yes it earns the ranking. 5. Sumac on Laugavegur for Levantine cooking that breaks up all the fish.
Six through ten
6. Snaps Bistro for a French-Icelandic lunch under 3,500 ISK, the best midday deal in town. 7. Kaffi Vinyl for a genuinely good vegan menu on Hverfisgata. 8. Islenski Barinn for plokkfiskur (fish stew) done properly. 9. Braud & Co for cardamom buns and sourdough — takeaway, but count it. 10. Sjavargrillid for grilled langoustine when you want to spend money on shellfish, around 8,900 ISK for the main.
Before you book
What people ask before booking Reykjavik.
Dill and Grillmarkadurinn: weeks ahead. Matur og Drykkur and Sumac: a few days. Everywhere else, walk in outside 19:00-21:00.
Snaps, Islenski Barinn, or a hot dog. Not Dill.
