1-3: the ones you should actually do

1. Golden Circle — Thingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss. Yes it's the cliche. Yes it's still the best three-stop combination in the country, and 300 km round-trip is doable in a short winter day. 2. South Coast to Reynisfjara — Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss, black sand at Vik. 380 km, long but unforgettable, and the waterfalls line up neatly along Route 1. 3. Snaefellsnes peninsula — the mini-Iceland day trip, with Kirkjufell, Djupalonssandur and a glacier volcano in one loop.

4-7: better than their reputation

4. Reykjanes peninsula — Gunnuhver, Bridge Between Continents, and if it's erupting, the eruption. Closest to Keflavik. 5. Landmannalaugar in summer only — F-road access, need a 4x4, but the rhyolite mountains earn the effort. 6. Borgarnes and the Settlement Centre — quieter, and the lamb soup at 2,890 ISK is the best in the west. 7. Hveragerdi for the Reykjadalur hot river hike, 45 minutes from town and criminally underused in shoulder season.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Can I do the South Coast and Golden Circle in one day?

No. People try; they regret it. That's 12 hours of driving in winter light. Pick one.

Do I need a rental car?

For 4-7, yes. For 1-3, group bus tours run daily from BSI terminal from around 12,000 ISK.
