The top three
Reynisfjara near Vik is the icon — basalt columns, sea stacks, and yes it's crowded from 10am. Go at 7am or after 6pm. Second: Djupalonssandur on Snaefellsnes, with rusted shipwreck bones scattered across the pebbles and half the crowd. Third: Stokksnes with Vestrahorn mountain behind — technically a black-sand isthmus with dunes, $10 access fee through the Viking Cafe. This is the photograph everyone wants.
The rest and the skips
Diamond Beach at Jokulsarlon is 20 minutes of your life well spent — chunks of glacier ice on black sand. Solheimasandur DC-3 plane wreck is oversold; the 4km walk in wind is grim and the plane is smaller than photos suggest. Skip Kirkjufjara — closed indefinitely after fatal accidents. And do not, ever, turn your back on the water at Reynisfjara. Sneaker waves kill roughly one tourist every two years.
