Reynisfjara near Vik is the icon — basalt columns, sea stacks, and yes it's crowded from 10am. Go at 7am or after 6pm. Second: Djupalonssandur on Snaefellsnes, with rusted shipwreck bones scattered across the pebbles and half the crowd. Third: Stokksnes with Vestrahorn mountain behind — technically a black-sand isthmus with dunes, ISK 1228 access fee through the Viking Cafe. This is the photograph everyone wants.
The rest and the skips
Diamond Beach at Jokulsarlon is 20 minutes of your life well spent — chunks of glacier ice on black sand. Solheimasandur DC-3 plane wreck is oversold; the 4km walk in wind is grim and the plane is smaller than photos suggest. Skip Kirkjufjara — closed indefinitely after fatal accidents. And do not, ever, turn your back on the water at Reynisfjara. Sneaker waves kill roughly one tourist every two years.

Can I swim at black beaches?
Absolutely not. Currents are lethal and water temperature stays around 6°C. These are looking beaches.
Best time of day for photos?
Blue hour, roughly 30 minutes before sunrise. Winter you get this at 10am, summer at 3am.
