1. National Museum of Iceland, Reykjavik — 2,500 ISK, the settlement to modern republic in one clear arc. Skip it and you’ll misunderstand everything else. 2. Eldheimar, Vestmannaeyjar — 2,900 ISK, built around a house buried by the 1973 eruption, unearthed like Pompeii. Best single-subject museum in the country. 3. Settlement Centre, Borgarnes — 2,900 ISK, tells Egil's Saga with actual craft, not cheap animation. 4. Skogar Folk Museum — 2,500 ISK, turf houses you can walk through, run by the late Thordur Tomasson's legacy.

Icelandic Punk Museum, Reykjavik — 1,500 ISK, in a former public toilet on Bankastraeti, exactly as small and weird as it sounds.

What I’d skip: the Phallological Museum (one gag), Aurora Reykjavik (a slideshow), and Perlan's exhibits (theme-park pricing for airport-level content). The Saga Museum is fine if it's raining and you have kids, but the National Museum tells the same story better for less.
