Iceland in one day: the honest Golden Circle spine

If you only have 10 hours on the ground, this is the loop that actually works from Reykjavik.

The 8am to 6pm plan

Pick the car up in Reykjavik by 8am and take Route 36 east. First stop 9:15am at Thingvellir: park at P1, walk the Almannagja rift down to Oxararfoss, and be back in the car by 10:30. Drive 55 minutes to Geysir, watch Strokkur go off twice (it erupts every 6-10 minutes), grab a soup at the cafe across the road, and be back on the road by 12:30. Gullfoss is 10 minutes further; give it 40 minutes with both viewing platforms.

From Gullfoss, detour south on Route 35 to Fridheimar tomato farm for a 2:30pm late lunch (book ahead, they turn people away). Skip Kerid crater if daylight is fading in winter; keep it if it is May onward. Aim to be at the Secret Lagoon in Fludir by 4pm for a 90-minute soak, then drive the 90 minutes back to Reykjavik via Selfoss for dinner at 8pm.

Where to sleep

Stay central Reykjavik so you can drop the car and walk to dinner. The 101 postcode around Laugavegur and Skolavordustigur puts you five minutes from everywhere that matters after dark. If you have an early flight the next morning, skip Reykjavik entirely and sleep in Keflavik near the airport instead — the drive back from Selfoss to Keflavik is the same distance as to Reykjavik anyway, and you save an hour in the morning.

Can I do the Golden Circle without a car?

Yes, Reykjavik Excursions and Grayline both run full-day coach tours for around 12,000-15,000 ISK. You lose the Secret Lagoon flexibility but gain a nap on the way back.

Is one day enough for Iceland?

Honestly no, but the Golden Circle plus a Blue Lagoon stop on the airport transfer is the closest you get to a fair sample in 24 hours.
