Ion Adventure Hotel at Nesjavellir is the couples' hotel — dark, moody rooms, the Lava Spa, aurora on clear nights, no children's menu because there are effectively no children. Deplar Farm is the money-no-object choice: 13 rooms, all-inclusive, geothermal indoor-outdoor pool, in the middle of the Fljot valley. Torfhus Retreat near the Golden Circle turns a private turf-house-with-hot-tub into 45 minutes from Reykjavik.

All three trade heavily on isolation. If your partner needs a town to walk around in the evenings, none of them will work — book Sand Hotel or Reykjavik EDITION in the city instead and drive out for day trips.

Strong mid-range picks

Hotel Ranga's river-view rooms with hot tubs are the sweet spot on the south coast. Hotel Budir on Snaefellsnes has the black wooden church, the empty beach and rooms that feel like a Nordic novel. Umi Hotel is quieter than Ranga and about 20 percent cheaper for similar quality. Frost and Fire in Hveragerdi is the closest romantic option to Reykjavik — 45 minutes and you are in a river-canyon spa hotel.

Skip the big Fosshotel and Icelandair chain properties for a couples trip unless location forces it. The rooms are fine but the corridors are full of tour groups at 7am, which sets the wrong tone. If you are self-driving anyway, an extra 20-minute detour usually gets you somewhere with under 30 rooms and no bus in the car park.
