Driving the 50 km from Keflavík to Reykjavík
The airport terminal at Keflavík sits roughly 50 km from downtown Reykjavík. Route 41 is a dual carriageway for most of that run, and in clear weather the drive takes about 45 minutes; in winter, with snow or sideways wind on the Reykjanesbraut, allow closer to 70 minutes. Car hire desks sit in a separate building a short walk from arrivals, and most companies let you drop the car at the same place before departure. If you are heading straight to a hotel in Reykjavík, the drive into districts like Miðborg (101) or Hlíðar takes you past the glass Perlan dome on Öskjuhlíð hill — a useful landmark when you are jet-lagged. Fuel stations along Route 41 include N1 and Orkan, and it pays to fill up before returning the car rather than at the airport.
Once in Reykjavík, parking is the real test. Central zones charge by the hour on weekdays, and many hotels in 101 sell permits or have a garage. If you are staying in a guesthouse in Vesturbær or Laugardalur, street parking is usually easier and cheaper. Driving gives you the freedom to stop at the Blue Lagoon on the way in, but do not underestimate the wind on the Reykjanesbraut: it can throw a small car sideways, and in a storm the road can close with little notice. For a city-focused trip of two or three nights, I would skip the car and use buses instead.
The airport bus and city connections
Flybus and Airport Direct run coaches timed to every arrival and departure. The Flybus drops passengers at BSÍ bus terminal near Hringbraut, from where smaller shuttles fan out to hotels in 101, 105 and beyond; Airport Direct offers a similar service with more drop-off points. The journey takes about 45 minutes to BSÍ, plus up to 20 minutes more if you are on a shuttle to a specific hotel. Coaches meet delayed flights, so even a late landing is usually covered. Tickets are bought at the terminal or online, and I would book the return leg at the same time to lock in a seat for an early flight.
From BSÍ, Strætó city buses connect to most neighbourhoods: route 1 runs along Hringbraut and Sæbraut, route 3 links to the east side, and route 14 serves Laugardalur. A single fare is modest, and a day pass quickly pays for itself if you plan several rides. The main catch is timing: early-morning departures for a 06:00 flight may fall outside the first city bus, so book a coach or a taxi the night before. Taxis from Keflavík to Reykjavík are comfortable but expensive; for a family of four with luggage, the coach still works out cheaper.
Flying into Keflavík and onward connections
Keflavík is Iceland's main international gateway, roughly a three-hour flight from London, five hours from New York and about three and a half hours from Copenhagen. The terminal handles both Schengen and non-Schengen arrivals, so passport queues can be long when several wide-body flights land together; a 30- to 45-minute wait is not unusual. If you are connecting to a domestic flight, note that most domestic services use Reykjavík Airport by the city centre, not Keflavík. Only a few domestic routes leave from Keflavík, so check which airport your onward flight uses before booking a tight transfer. In winter, fog and wind can delay both arrivals and departures, so leave a generous gap between international and domestic legs.
For travellers staying near the airport before an early departure, the area around Keflavík town and Vogar has guesthouses and small hotels, mostly ten to fifteen minutes from the terminal by car. This suits people with a 06:00 or 07:00 flight far better than staying in Reykjavík and leaving at 04:00. Otherwise, I would book accommodation in Reykjavík and treat the airport transfer as a fixed cost. Late May to early September is the busiest and most expensive period; late September and March often bring lower room rates and still manageable weather for driving, though daylight is shorter.
Good to know
Questions, answered
Is there a train from Keflavík to Reykjavík?
No. Iceland has no passenger railway, so your choices are airport coach, private transfer, taxi or hire car. The coach takes about 45 minutes to BSÍ bus terminal in Reykjavík, with hotel shuttles adding another 10 to 20 minutes.
How long should I allow between landing at Keflavík and a domestic flight?
Allow at least three hours. Most domestic flights leave from Reykjavík Airport, not Keflavík, and the transfer between them takes roughly 45 to 60 minutes by road, longer in winter weather or at peak times.
Should I stay near Keflavík or in Reykjavík before an early flight?
For departures before 08:00, stay in Keflavík town or Vogar, ten to fifteen minutes from the terminal, and skip the pre-dawn drive from Reykjavík. For later flights, base yourself in Reykjavík and book a coach seat the night before.
